AUSTIN IDOL LIVE: “HEY VINCE, WHAT’S THAT SMELL?”

A day doesn’t go by without someone asking me, “Hey Idol, think you and Jerry Lawler will ever have a rematch”? My answer is usually the same, “You never know!”

Would an “IDOL vs LAWLER” match be box office? More than likely yes, and here’s why. Austin Idol and Jerry Lawler have a long track record and rich history drawing Big Money. We were probably as hot as hot can be for several years in the Memphis area as we feuded from one city to the next.

Then there were the times we were partners and continued to draw Big bucks against so many rivals that included the Road Warriors, Stan Hansen and Jesse Ventura, Ken Patera and Terry Funk, and a laundry list of others! I remember when Hawk and Animal first came to Memphis to face off against “The Idol & The King”. Can you say, “Sell out”?

It was so Big, Ole Anderson who was the booker in Atlanta, jumped on this and booked a return match at the Omni in Atlanta and then on to Cleveland, Ohio. We were sizzling hot baby, and it didn’t make any difference who Lawler and I wrestled against, we were on Fire! The Mid-South Wrestling fans were just waiting for something to happen? They all new this partnership between two giant egos would never last but, they had no idea just how this hugely successful team would self destruct? I mean, egos do get in the way, and between the two of us, we had’m. That’s a shoot!!

As time progressed we built an un-stoppable force and every wrestling fan in the territory knew something was bound to happen? Sure enough it did! Memphis Wrestling aired “Live” every Saturday morning from 11:00 A.M.-!2:30 P.M. and had a Massive TV rating! Numbers like no other in the U.S. and that was saying allot! Announced on this particular Saturday was Jerry Lawler seeking a world title match with AWA Champ Nick Bockwinkle. “Wildfire” Tommy Rich happened to be wrestling in the area at the time and hearing this, strolled out to the set where legendary TV announcer Lance Russel was. Tommy basically stated a strong case that being former NWA Heavyweight Champion, he should be the one wrestling Bockwinkle instead of Lawler. Tommy had a valid point, wouldn’t you say?

Enter “The Universal Hearthrob” Austin Idol via a taped interview because I rarely did TV in Memphis. I too staked my claim that I was the one who should be wrestling for the AWA Title. After all, I had a solid case to be the rightful contender rather then Lawler or Rich. With this interesting three pronged situation, “The King” decided he would settle this by wrestling both of us back to back on Monday night at the Mid-South Coliseum. This would prove who the rightful contender was. Big mistake Kingfish because this turned out to backfire on you, although you threw a Giant fire ball on Wildfire in your match with him. Seizing that exact moment, I leisurely strolled down to the ring, spun the King around, and hit him with one of my famous trademark right hand punches smack on that big egotistical jaw. Bang, Down, like the Titanic goes Lawler and it’s IDOL Time! As I pummeled the hapless Lawler, the crowd became frenzied! With impeccable timing, The Kingster sent the signal to his legion of loyal fans by pulling down his strap! Never a good thing if you’re his opponent, unless you’re Austin Idol!

The King mounted one of his Classic Comebacks to the delight of a raucous crowd who thought this is lights out for “The Idol”! Surprise, because look who comes running down the aisle? It’s Tommy Rich! who had just been burned by Lawler in the previous match! Rich, attacking Lawler from behind, nails him and Bang, The King hits the canvas again! Was this a twist of fate? A turning point in the annals of Memphis Wrestling? Possibly, one for the record books in the entire History of Professional Wrestling! In the next few moments history was in the making! Tommy and I put the boots to Lawler and right there in that split second, we drug the lifeless King Of Wrestling over to one of the ring posts, counted to three, and jerked him, legs spread wide open, into a solid steel ring post! The crowd was stunned because they just witnessed a maneuver that had never been executed before. Seriously, this had never been done anywhere! Taking full advantage of the moment, I added insult to injury by slowly walking over to the sprawling Lawler and legitimately slapped the crap out of him. Talked about an incensed crowd?

Tommy and I both knew it’s time to get out of here, if we can? This is what set the stage for the eventual and historic “Steel Cage Hair vs Hair Match” with Austin Idol and jerry Lawler. You should have been there, you’ll probably Never see a spectacle like this again, unless Vincent Kennedy McMahon wants to entertain this? Do you believe Jerry Lawler would LOVE one last chance of getting even with Austin Idol? “The Ultimate” Redemption Match! Austin “The Universal Hearthrob” Idol vs Jerry “The King” Lawler in a “Steel Cage, Hair vs Hair Match”! What’s that smell Vince? Smells like $$$!
